E D U C A T I O N (Selected)
Note: My first introduction to Asia, in the early 1970s, was with Minnihon: the Japanese Cultural Center in Minneapolis. My subsequent experience was a study trip to China in 1984, to attend the Zhejiang Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China. We were the first group of Americans, by invitation, to attend this school of 400 students and 200 instructors.
My background in the history of both countries is extensive. The histories of both are very different.
My comments here are about China and its history of periods of repression and openness. Today, watching the increasing change in the treatment of other countries and other people within and without their territory during, again, a period of repression, leads me to no longer use my background to produce any artwork influenced by nor in support of their behavior.
My time with Reiko Ito Shellum at Minnihon, my past relationship with the  Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis and other studies, returns me to my first, and very positive, connection with the culture of Japan.
I stated a number of years ago that I was an American and that my focus would be centered from the US.
